From legendary action director Tsui Hark and the creators of international smash hit DETECTIVE DEE: MYSTERY OF THE PHANTOM FLAME comes the captivating tale of Dee Renjie’s beginnings in the Imperial police force. His very first case, investigating reports of a sea monster terrorizing the town, reveals a sinister conspiracy of treachery and betrayal, leading to the highest reaches of the Imperial family.
I am a big fan of Any Lau and Tsui Hark, I loved the first Detective Dee film and was looking forward to the second. To my surprise the second film is a prequel to the first so Andy Lau is not in this one which left me a bit disappointed but with Tsui Hark at the reigns I was still very excited to see it.
As the film begins there is an attack on the royal fleet of ships by some sort of mysterious sea monster. This cause major panic from the townsfolk, so much that they plan on sacrificing a local to please the gods. Meanwhile the local detective is given ten days to solve the mystery by the Empress.
Enter Detective Dee as he arrives in the city. If doesn't take long for Dee to get involved in what is going on including kidnappings and a swamp monster as well. Before long Dee is given support and has the taken over the case himself but can he solve it in time?
Wow, this is an amazing prequel to a fantastic first film. Much like the first film this is a fantasy so there was people flying around doing incredible feats a normal person cannot do and there there is creatures and action galore. I have aa soft spot for the first film but in some ways this one is even better if that is even possible. One thing Tsui improved on is the main character, Dee displays much more crime solving characteristics in this film, I loved that he could see things no one else could see.
I could go on and on about all the wonderful things I liked about the film but that would only cause spoilers for those of you waiting to see the film so I will just say that this film does not disappoint. If you are a fan of the first film I highly recommend owning this one as well. Lot of action, mystery and suspense made better by some very cool special effects and some breath-taking wire work and fight scenes.
