In the taut thriller, when Nancy (Blake Lively) is surfing on a secluded beach, she finds herself on the feeding ground of a great white shark. Though she is stranded only 200 yards from shore, survival proves to be the ultimate test of wills, requiring all of Nancy’s ingenuity, resourcefulness, and fortitude.

"The Shallows" tells the story of Nancy who travels by herself to a Mexican beach. She picks this out the way beach because it was her mother's favorite spot. Nancy travels there to do some surfing and to pay tribute to her mom. We also find out that she has taken time away from school where she was going to be a doctor and you can tell she is doing some soul searching as well. While out on the water alone she is attacked by a great white shark but some how manages to escape by making it to a reef. But the shark plans on remaining patient until the tide rises again and Nancy is left with only one option, swim to a nearby buoy or die.

I am not a big fan of shark movies so I wasn't expecting much from the film. There has been so many killer shark movies and most of them have been so over the top it is not even funny.

"The Shallows" takes a more realistic approach by telling the story of a young lady trapped in the middle of the ocean while a great white circles around. The film is definitely a slow burn that builds some good tension and suspense as it moves along. It is also a pretty realistic shark film, at least for the most part because there are some things that are a little hard to believe especially the ending.

For what it is I enjoyed the film and the ocean and surrounding areas are beautiful and easy of the eyes. The effects used in the film are good for the most part and there are some action scenes in the film to go along with the suspense and tension.

As far as the acting goes Blake Lively did a good job playing Nancy, I never really paid a whole lot of attention to her acting before but she is very good here. So overall I though the film was entertaining and it had a few edge of your seat moments but it also could have been better, especially the ending.

"The Shallows" will be on DVD, Blu-ray and 4K on 9/17/16 with Special Features that include:

Deleted Scenes

Four Featurettes:

“Shooting in The Shallows”

“How to Build a Shark”

“Finding The Perfect Beach: Lord Howe Island”

“When Sharks Attack”

You can order the DVD HERE the Blu-ray HERE and the 4K HERE.

If you like a good killer shark flick then I recommend checking this one out. Even with its flaws it is still one of better ones to come along in some time.
