Cast: Maisie Williams (“Game of Thrones,” The New Mutants), Sylvester McCoy (The Hobbit franchise, “Doctor Who”), Jake Curran (“Spotless”, Stardust), Ian Kenny (Solo: A Star Wars Story, Sing Street), Andrew Ellis (Teen Spirit, "This Is England"), and Rita Tushingham ("The Pale Horse," Vera)
In THE OWNERS, a group of friends think they found the perfect easy score - an empty house with a safe full of cash. But when the elderly couple that lives there comes home early the tables are suddenly turned. As a deadly game of cat and mouse ensues the would-be thieves are left to fight to save themselves from a nightmare they could never have imagined.
As the film opens, we get to meet, Gaz, Terry and Nathan. Three friends who are sitting outside the home of an older doctor and his wife. Terry's mom works for the old couple so Terry knows that when they leave the house. The boys are waiting until the leave to enter their home and steal from them. As they are waiting Nathan's girlfriend, Mary rides up to them on her bike yelling at Nathan and insisting she needs her car back in order to make it to work on time.
While Mary sits outside the three young men enter the home and search for a safe but when they find it they can't get it open so they decide to wait until the old couple gets home and force them to give up the combination.
Mary eventually joins them inside which is right before the couple arrive home a bit early. The young men tie the old couple up and threaten them in order to get the safe open but what they don't know is this old couple have a lot of fight in them.
There has been loads of home invasion movies just like this one and it brings with it a lot of the same flaws like people acting stupid and doing stupid things. Still even with its flaws 'The Owners' brings some new ideas to the table and it does offer up some good tension and suspense as it draws to its conclusion.
Another thing it has going for it is its cast including Maisie Williams, Sylvester McCoy, Jake Curran and Ian Kenny. You expect a solid performance from Maisie but to my surprise the whole cast was excellent. Even with all its weaknesses I still enjoyed the film. Call it a guilty pleasure I guess.
'The Owners' will be on DVD and Blu-ray October 20, 2020. I recommend checking it out especially during Halloween season.
