The Place For The Latest Movie Reviews
Cast: Zack Andrews, Bobby Roe, Brandy Schaefer, Mikey Roe, Jeff Larson
Beneath the fake blood and cheap masks of countless haunted house attractions across the country, there are whispers of truly terrifying alternatives. Looking to find an authentic, blood-curdling good fright for Halloween, five friends set off on a road trip in an RV to track down these underground Haunts. Just when their search seems to reach a dead end, strange and disturbing things start happening and it becomes clear that the Haunt has come to them…
"The Houses October Built" is another in a long line of found footage films. The story-line is unique yet simple. A group of five friends, one girl and four guys decide to take a road trip five days before Halloween to try to find some of the most underground haunts there are. The first part of the trip leads them to a few haunts that are pretty basic but it doesn't take long before some strange things begin to happen which eventually leads to a night of real terror they never expected.
The trailer for the film looked interesting enough but I was not expecting a lot from it but to my surprise it turned out to be a pretty enjoyable film. The film's action does not really kick in until the last 20 minutes or so but I never found it to be boring because I enjoyed all the haunted house scenes with them getting scared of various characters that chase them and I enjoyed the interaction from the group as well.
Production wise I thought the film looked great, the story is shown through camcorders which I thought was going to be very annoying but it was not as bad as I expected it to be. "The Houses October Built" provided some laughs, a few jump scares and some genuine ones as well, especially during the film's climax.
I must mention the cast as well, each and everyone in the film did a terrific job but the main five actors were all fantastic giving very realistic performances. I recommend the film to all horror fans and to anyone that loves Halloween and the fun it brings every year visiting your local haunted houses. This is one of the better found footage films I have seen in some time and even though it is not perfect it is still an entertaining ride.
