When a baby is left on the steps of an isolated monastery, on a remote Scottish island during WWII, the nuns take it in, planning to care for it until a storm passes. Soon though, strange and unexplained events begin to happen at the convent. 'The Baby in the Basket' tells the story of a group a nuns, an older caretaker and his new replacement. For the first half an hour or so director's Nathan Shepka and Andy Crane take their time introducing us to all the characters and the basic plot line. But after a baby arrives at their doorstep right before a major storm things take on a more horrific tone.
The groups of Nuns all seem to have their own personal demons but after the baby arrives it seems the worse side of them all comes out. Is there something sinister about the seemingly innocent child or is there something else to explain the strange and deadly happenings?
The film was done on a low budget and it times in really shows but the story and the characters make up for it some what. The film starts off as an engaging drama as we learn about the group of Nuns and their Mother Superior as well as the new caretaker who brings his own demons to the mix.
Once the horror kicks in the atmosphere created by the settings, the shadowy images and the fear of the unknown kicks inn and you get a suspenseful and frightening tale of mayhem the rest of the way. The acting in the film is all very good and the directors did a great job of keeping the story moving at a great pace while invoking fear in the hearts of all those to dare to watch this unholy horror film.
