Prone to daydreaming, listening to French crooners and indulging other self-absorbed fantasies, Oliver (Craig Roberts) suddenly finds himself submerged in real-life, dual challenges -- plotting to lose his virginity with a quirky new girlfriend, while also struggling to reconcile his parent's marriage, even though his mom seems smitten with the self-help guru next door.

"Submarine" is not your typical coming of age film, it never falls into the raunchy humor that always seems to be a part of the genre. Instead this is a smart, original and often very funny look at Oliver Tate, a sensitive Welsh teenager who does not "fit in" with his fellow students. He spends his time daydreaming about how people would react to his death, listening to recordings by French crooners and also plotting how to lose his virginity, preferably with the equally eccentric Jordana, who likes to start fires. Like I stated there are some very funny scenes in the film but it's also a realistic look at the life of a teenager who is attempting to find his way in the world while dealing with his parent's dissolving marriage and is mother's brain tumor surgery. There's a lot going on in the film so to discuss too much of it here would only ruin it for those waiting to see it.

One thing I do know is "Submarine" isn't going to be a film for everyone, mainstream movie goers may find it hard to follow or a bit too slow for their tastes but that is what makes the film so good, it isn't just another teen film. It's a film that demands your attention and Craig Roberts is incredible as Oliver, you can't take your eyes off of him, the film is his and he does an amazing job carrying it.

"Submarine" is about a young teen facing the problems in his life head on and for my money that's what makes the film so damn good, it's what growing up is all about. It's a moving yet charming film that mixes drama and humor perfectly and the performances are all stellar. If you like the genre then I highly recommend checking it out, the film might not be mainstream but give it a chance and you will be rewarded in the end.
