After a long and unsuccessful period trying to have a family, Claire and Adrian finally adopt a girl. The coming of Isabel is desired by almost the whole family but making a six-year-old girl with a past of her own fit into her new life might be something more complicated than they expected. Strange things start to happen from the moment Isabel "and her imaginary friend, Stevie", come to live with them. The situation becomes more complicated when Stevie's behavior becomes aggressive. Only Claire and Isabel know that Stevie is more than just a figment of Isabel's imagination. Claire, with the no one's support, will do everything to find out who Stevie is and what he wants. Perhaps if she succeeds, she will be able to recoup their lives and have the family she had desired for so long.
"Stevie" is a Psychological Thriller/Horror film that deals with a couple who decides to adopt a six-year-old girl to feel the void in their lives after being unsuccessful for years having their own child, but shortly after arriving the girl has an imaginary friend named Stevie but what starts out as something cute soon turns ugly as strange things begin to happen in the house, things that seem to target the mother and no one, even her husband believes her. As the film opens there is a horrific car crash and after that the film switches to present day but during the film you get to see the woman in the hospital, these are short scenes that are placed perfectly inbetween the present day activities. The flashbacks only give small pieces of the puzzle at a time, building towards the film's climax when the truth is revealed. A made-for-Television movie "Stevie" plays out much bigger and Director, Bryan Goeres does a great job at providing enough twists and turns in the film along with some good scares to keep you on the edge of your seat. There is an interesting story here and early on in the film you believe that the ghost might indeed be the little girl's friend who died but as the movie moves along you are taken in a completely different direction, this is the stories core strength as it is always keeping you guessing and waiting to see not only what happens next but who this supernatural being is and what exactly is their agenda. Another great thing about the film is it's amazing cast, Catherine McCormack and Jordi Mollà are terrific as the married couple, McCormack especially shines here. Also Ida Jorgensen is great as the little girl, she really makes her character believable, this is a talented young actress who seems to have a bright future ahead of her if she so chooses. "Stevie" really is a step above most Television movies, the production values seem much higher and the story blended with believable characters thanks to it's remarkable cast certainly takes the film to a whole new level. The film is intense, thrilling, scary and just plain entertaining.
If you enjoy a good horror/thriller then I highly recommend picking this film up today. There is a lot going on in the film and there is a lot to like, I had a hard time finding much wrong with the story as a whole and I thought the ending was perfect. A scary film indeed but it also deals with letting go of the past and moving on with our lives, an Independent gem that should easily gain a following due to strong word of mouth, this is one of those unknown films that is not to be missed.
