The Place For The Latest Movie Reviews
The cops can’t control him. The mob wants him dead. And time is running out.
Donnie Yen is Detective Chen Zilong – but the criminal underworld knows him as “Dragon” Chen, a dangerous but effective enforcer. When rivalries explode with the reappearance of an old enemy and a brutal murder, the Triads close ranks and unleash a series of executions – with Chen at the top of the list.
Undercover and under attack, he has no choice but to rely on a new partner (Jing Tian) and his knowledge of the streets to get out alive. It’s the only chance he’s got.
Donnie Yen has been around for a long time but he seemed to always play second fiddle to stars like Jackie Chan and Jet Li but that all changed around 2005 when he starred in "S.P.L." Since then Donnie has been the go to guy. "Special ID" is his newest film to be released in the U.S. He plays a cop who goes undercover in a ruthless underworld organization to stop a gang leader, only to put himself in great danger after being exposed by his former protégé and best friend.
Plot wise the film is simple but there is a lot going on amongst the characters, it is not without its flaws but it is still an enjoyable story with some great action scenes, some drama and even a little bit of humor sprinkled in a long the way.
The fight scenes are a mix of street fighting and MMA style fighting which makes the action fast paced and very exciting especially the end fight between Yen and Andy On. Tian Jing is terrific in the film as well as Yen's partner, She handles all her action scenes with ease.
Production wise the film is everything you expect from Asian cinema, the sound and the cinematography are both brilliant.
"Special ID" may not be Yen's best film but it is still a highly entertaining one that brings a lot of excitement with it. The film is available now on DVD and Blu-ray with Special Features that include:
Original Language: Cantonese
Dubbed Language: English
Subtitle: English, French, Spanish

If you are Donnie Yen fan or just love a good action film then I highly recommend checking this out.
