The Place For The Latest Movie Reviews
Cast: Maya Erskine (Hulu’s “PEN15”, “Casual” and “Insecure”), Jack Quaid (Amazon’s “The Boys”, Rampage, Logan Lucky), Ed Begley, Jr. (“Arrested Development”), Beck Bennett (“Saturday Night Live”), Rosalind Chao (Mulan), Brianne Howey (“The Passage”), Jon Bass (“Miracle Workers”) and Finn Wittrock (“American Horror Story”)
Long-time friends Alice and Ben find themselves in that inevitable year that all late 20-somethings experience—in which seemingly every person they know gets married—and agree to be one another’s plus ones as they power through an endless parade of insufferable weddings.
Alice and Ben are friends from college and both are struggling with relationships. In their 20's and having to either hear that their friends are in a serious relationship or are getting married is taking a tool on the both of them. Alice is a fun loving girl who is coming off a painful break up while Ben just can't seem to commit fully to anyone.
When they find out they have to go to 10 weddings combined they decide to do them together to make it easier on each other. When Ben's dad tells him, he is getting married again to a woman half his age it really makes it all that much more difficult for him. Luckily he has Alice to lend on, they get along so well but neither of them ever imagined that the two of them might actually be lovers.
'Plus One' doesn't add anything you haven't seen before in a comedy/romance film before but it has a lot going for it that makes it one of the best I have seen in some time. For starters I must give credit to writers/directors, Jeff Chan and Andrew Rhymer. They have created a comedy/romance that gets our attention right from the start. It takes the film nearly 12 minutes to get to the opening credits but by that time you are already invested in the story and its two main characters. You already feel for both and wish the best for them. They have written a film that is both witty and infectious.
Another thing that makes the film so good is the cast. Everyone in the film is terrific including, Ed Begley Jr. who is amazing as Ben's father, Chuck but the film belongs to its two lead actors. Maya Erskine and Jack Quaid as Alice and Ben are fantastic together. Maya Erskine gets all the cool jokes as the wild party girl while Jack Quaid plays the perfect straight guy. This has to be the best screen duo I have seen in a long time. This is a very funny adult comedy and Maya Erskine is hilarious in the film and she is so adorable that it makes you wish you had a friend like her in your life.
I don't understand why this terrific film never got a wide release in theaters, instead it was in theaters and on digital / On Demand. That in itself is great but to me something this fun and this entertaining deserves more than that. Either way it is one of my new favorite films of the year so far. If you like a good comedy/romance that will have you laughing out loud and even shedding a tear or two then I highly recommend seeing it.
'Plus One' is one of those films that you can't wait to tell your friends about. I had a great time watching this film and I cannot wait to see what Maya Erskine and Jack Quaid do next as well as what the amazing film makers got coming up. 'Plus One' is the perfect blend of comedy, drama and romance it is sure to leave a smile on your face. It will be released on DVD and Blu-ray on August 6, 2019.
