While searching for an ancient relic on the stunning Greek island of Patmos, uptight American archaeologist Eric (Matthew Modine) falls for vivacious local Katerina (Agni Scott). But when his career clashes with his burgeoning romance, Eric must decide what matters most in life.
Opa! doesn't offer up anything new as far as the romantic comedy genre goes but it's a cute, feel good movie that leaves you with a smile on your face. The story is simple, Eric is an American archaeologist who flies to the Greek island of Patmos in search of a ancient relic, his father before him searched for the same relic and Eric wants to prove that his dad was right, that it does exist. He has an edge on other archaeologists in that he uses satellites and high-tech computer systems to pinpoint where something of value might be buried. Once arriving he is introduced to a local single mother and it doesn't take long before the two of them begin to fall in love, but Eric will have a tough decision to make, true love or the find of a lifetime.
The film is as entertaining as it is predictable and I mean that in a good way, there's so much to like about the film, first off the cast here is exceptional including Matthew Modine as Eric and Agni Scott as the beautiful Katerina. Both are terrific and have great chemistry together. The supporting cast is outstanding as well including, Richard Griffiths and Alki David. Opa! is a story about finding love in the unlikeliest of places and doing what's right to hang on to it. The film is a postcard for the Greek Islands, shot on location every scene shows off it's beauty, if this doesn't make you want to sell all your earthy possessions and head to the island nothing will. It is almost like another character and it acts as a breath-taking backdrop for the story. A very sweet story, with its fair share of quirky characters photographed magnificently against a backdrop of Patmos. I had a wonderful time watching this film and was left with a big smile on my face long after it was over. A perfect film for those that want to just sit back and enjoy some light entertainment, plus you romantics out there are going to love everything about the film, every scene reeks of romance.
