Cast: Dominic Purcell, Stephen Dorff, David Boreanaz, Walton Goggins, Stephen Lang, James Woods
One year ago, dirty cop Detective Callahan (Stephen Dorff) was shot in a drug bust gone wrong, and saved by an anonymous stranger who gave him a second chance to clean up his life. But when the stranger finally comes forward, seeking revenge against the men responsible for a string of assaults on young women at a local strip club, Callahan must go rogue to find the attacker, in an effort to hide how his past played a part in these crimes. His desperation to find the attacker, and cover his tracks, takes him down a violent road of deception, cover-ups and fraud. Can he play the ''good cop'' and track down the assailant, while still keeping his reputation clean?
"Officer Down" tells the story of corrupt cop, Detective Callahan who gets a second chance at life and at redemption after getting shot by a gang member when he stops their red mustang and asks them to get out of the car. As Callahan is about to lose his life a few shots ring out and a stranger runs over and basically saves his life as the gang members quickly drive away. Callahan pleads on TV for the man that saved his life to come forward but he never does but to many Callahan is now considered a hero. A year later he has cleaned up his life but things are about to change.
One day that stranger finally appears with his dead daughter's diary. The diary tells of how she had to strip, among other things to pay for her tuition. As Callahan begins reading the diary he also begins his own private investigation on a man he believes is responsible for the death of the girl but things are not as they seem.
"Officer Down" is a bit slow at times but it is also an engaging and suspenseful crime thriller that doesn't give too much away early on but instead it provides a number of twists and turns that keep you wanting to know more, no one or nothing is as it seems. To be honest I really wasn't expecting much from this film so I was really taken by surprise at how well written and clever the story was. The film has believable characters and a story that draws you in and doesn't let go till the credits begin to roll. The last 20 minutes or so of the film will have you at the edge of your seat.
Production wise the film looks great and it's slow pace is deliberate so have a bit of patience early because it pays off in the end. The film has a outstanding cast, Stephen Dorff is fantastic as Callahan but the supporting cast which includes, Stephen Lang, David Boreanaz and James Woods to name only a few are amazing. "Officer Down" is a cop thriller that is going to gain a large audience quickly due to strong word of mouth. This is easily Director, Brian A Miller's best offering to date thanks in large part to the writing of John Chase. I highly recommend this film to anyone that loves a good crime story, "Officer Down" will keep you on the edge and guessing where the story is going next.
