Found floating in the ocean, embittered and jaded detective Lam (Simon Yam) is called in to find the murderer. Lam quickly identifies a killer from the past - a brutal man just released from prison (Nick Cheung) with possible ties to the family. But what Lam surmises as a clear-cut case of revenge gets murkier, the more he investigates. Suspicion, facts, and the truth become harder, the closer he looks. What unfolds is a crime from the past. 20 years of lies, and a secret so shocking it threatens to pull the entire case down. Who is the victim and who is the killer?
"Nightfall" gets your attention right from its opening scene. It shows a man a prison shower having an all out brawl with four other men. We find out the man is Wong Yuen-yeung who was accused and convicted of murder of a young woman 21 years before, he is now being released on parole.
We are then introduced to Detective Lam who is charge of a detective squad that reopens old cases. When he gets assigned to a new murder case of a famed celebrity he begins to investigate everyone who has ever been in contact with the pianist which leads him to suspect Wong, as the story moves along you find out that the pianist was responsible for Wong going to jail in the first place so it appears to be an act of revenge.
There's a lot going on in the film, there is a number of suspects to pick through as well as a few twists and turns along the way so to talk anymore about the story would only ruin it for those that are waiting to see it. What I can say is that "Nightfall" is a pretty solid copy film, sure it's not perfect and I was able to figure out most of the ending before it happened but that didn't seem to matter because it was an engaging story that kept my interest all the way to the end that mattered most.
Another thing the film has going for it is its cast, everyone in the film did a great job but it clearly belongs to Simon Yam as the Detective and Nick Cheung as his main suspect. Both actors give outstanding performances here which really takes the film up another notch. Production wise the film looks and sounds great but that is something I have come to expect from anything Asian.
Like I already said, "Nightfall" is not without its flaws and it is not a perfect film by any means but it is an entertaining, well done copy thriller that has a solid story and a cast that delivers. I recommend this to anyone that likes a good crime film. There is plenty of drama, suspense and just the right amount of action to please any fan.
