A virus kills most of the world's population. Doctor Van Morgen (Franco Nero) does a study on five survivors to seek an antidote to the virus, but finds out it may have been caused by a reversal of the magnetic poles of the earth... Or something else.
"New Order" takes place in 2033, it's been three years since an unknown bacteriological attack wiped out almost 80% of the global population. Its no longer a safe place to be in large population regions because of the rotting corpses that are spreading new diseases. A city called New Birth City was set up in hopes of finding a cure as well as being a safe haven for those that survived. Two Oxford professors headed the research, and two years after the outbreak one of the professors died leaving Dr. Cornelius Van Morgen, a world renowned biologist to continue the research. Dr. Cornelius Van Morgen chooses five people from among the survivors and puts them up in an old country house where his deceased colleague had set up a research laboratory. Working with the notes his research partner has left behind and observing the five survivors, Dr Cornelius Van Morgen continues his desperate search for a cure or vaccine.
The film is a slow moving Sci-fi that focuses more on it's characters and it's story. There are no zombies or infected people running around looking to eat people but that's what makes the film so good. The story concentrates on the doctor and his test subjects the entire time, each character is well-developed and you grow feelings for everyone of them in one way or another as the film moves along.
"New Order" is really a hard film to talk about without ruining the surprises that await. What starts out as a story of desperation as the doctor searches for a cure and survival but later it turns into something different. This is the film's main strength, the story which has you thinking one thing only to toss a major twist at you later in the film. That is what makes the film so unique, this is not your typical Sc-fi, it's a thinking man's film that shakes up the genre.
The cast did a terrific job playing their characters giving realistic and believable performances and what a joy it was to see Franco Nero on screen again, He is incredible as the doctor. Production wise the film looks and sounds great, you would never know it was done on a limited budget. This is Writer/Director, Marco Rosson's first feature film and his previous experience really pays off here. He has a created a compelling and engaging film that draws you into the character's lives and it doesn't let you go till the shocking ending.
"New Order" represents everything that is good about Independent Cinema, it offers an original story and an amazing cast that entertains you all the way to the end with plenty of drama and suspense.
The film will arrive on DVD 2/19/2013 so be sure to check it out. An infectious story that will leave you mesmerized.
