The Place For The Latest Movie Reviews
Cast: Julia Batelaan, Emma de Paauw, Joost Bolt, Annelies Appelhof
Molly is an electrifying and imaginative tale of one young woman's determined struggle to survive in an inhospitable world. In a barren landscape ravished by war, a super-powered young woman roams the violent post-apocalyptic landscape, armed only with a bow and arrow, to confront the dangers around her. When a sadistic ringmaster who runs an underground fight club hears of her supernatural abilities, he sends his sociopathic marauders to capture her and make her a star attraction in his cage fights.
'Molly' is an English-Language Dutch Action/Sci-Fi Thriller from Directors, Colinda Bongers and Thijs Meuwese. This is the feature film debut for both of them. The film tells the story of A young woman living alone in a post apocalyptic wasteland who finds herself hunted down by marauders who want her to fight in their fighting pit for their entertainment.
There really isn't a lot more I could add plot wise here without ruining the film. The film was obviously shot on a low budget of around $310,000 which is considered low compared to Hollywood standards but the directors did a great job of taking advantage of everything they had to work with. One of the first things I noticed was how well the film looked. The colored just popped off the screen. It is truly a beautiful film to look at.
Another thing that made the film so good was the cast, everyone in the film did a good job but the highlight here was Julia Batelaan who made her feature film debut as Molly. She not only gave a great performance acting wise but she was also fantastic in all the fight scenes.
And speaking of the fight scenes, there are a lot of them. The last 40 minutes or so is like one extended fight and they are done in a realistic and entertaining way. They have completed the second film which I look forward to seeing. 'Molly' is a very enjoyable post Post-Apocalyptic film much like "Mad Max" or any other films you might think of. It is well made and even though the story is a simple one it keeps you engaged the entire time as you root for Molly all the way to the end. The film doesn't have your typical hero and I think that made it even better. The film has a lot of fights and a whole lot of heart so I recommend it to everyone that likes this kind of movie. It will be released on Blu-ray, DVD and VOD October 2nd so be sure to check it out. The Blu-ray and DVD will come with Special Features that include:
feature length commentary with co-directors Colinda Bongers and Thijs Meuwese as well as a 30-minute making of featurette.
