The Place For The Latest Movie Reviews
Cast: Troian Bellisario, Bailey Noble
Ten-year-old Lucie flees from the isolated warehouse where she has been held prisoner. Deeply traumatized, she is plagued by awful night terrors at the orphanage that takes her in. Her only comfort comes from Anna, a girl her own age. Nearly a decade later and still haunted by demons, Lucie finally tracks down the family that tortured her. As she and Anna move closer to the agonizing truth, they find themselves trapped in a nightmare if they cannot escape, a martyr's fate awaits them.
I loved the original 2008 French film so I wasn't very happy when I read Hollywood remade the film. I am totally against remakes and I think they should only be made if they can make a better film than the original. So the film makers were screwed from the start because there was no way in hell a better film or even as good a film was a coming out of Hollywood, not when you are remaking a classic like the 2008 film was.
The film starts off about the same as the original but at some point it takes a major turn and it turns into something worse than I could have imagined. I might have been all right with a remake had it honored the original film and followed it frame for frame even, keeping in all the violence, suspense and thrills that was "Martyrs." But no they couldn't leave well enough alone and I bet they were expecting good reviews from this one. If there are people out there that liked the film they had to have never had the chance to see the original film.
The only semi good thing I can say about the film is the cast did a good job all things considered. Certainly not as good as the actors in the original film but not terrible either when you consider the material they had to work with here. I hate being harsh on movies because I always look to find something good about each film I review but sometimes that is a hard thing to do and with this one it was impossible. If you must see this film at least watch the original first. "Martyrs" is available on DVD and Blu-ray with Special Features that include:
MARTYRS: First Look

There was no reason in the world to remake this great film, Hollywood just doesn't have the balls to make a film as extreme as the original so why bother.
