A late-night suicide hotline operator receives a disturbing call from someone claiming to be him, knowing personal details only he would know. The caller threatens to end his life within the hour, forcing the operator into a tense, emotional race against time. As the clock ticks down, he must confront his deepest fears and uncover the truth before it’s too late to save "himself"
'Lifeline' tells the story of Steven Thomas, a volunteer at a suicide hotline. It is New Year's Eve and he is at the call center by himself. The evening starts off like any other as he begins receiving calls but one call is quite different and as it turns out very personal. It is a call from a young man who claims to be at a hotel plans on killing himself at midnight. He also happens to have a lot in common with Steven including his name.
At heart "Lifeline" is a drama that centers on abuse at the hands of a parent and the scars it leaves forever. Director, Feras Alfuqaha takes that premise and adds some supernatural elements that helps the audience to be more engaged as the watch and wait to find out what the mystery is behind this call from the past. This is Feras Alfuqaha's first time directing a feature film and it is a fine debut.
The film's star, Josh Stewart did a great job dealing with all the emotions needed to play such a role and the rest of the limited cast including Brecken Merrill, Charlene Amoia and Judah Lewis all give great performances as well.
'Lifeline' had me hooked right from its opening scenes and I became more and more engaged as it went along. It is a dramatic film that tugs at the heart strings and it supernatural fantasy elements makes you that much more invested. The film is an excellent debut from its director and it is a film that hits hard and after. One that will stay with you long after it is over. I highly recommend checking it out when it comes to theaters and digital platforms on February 21st.
