Cast: Gia Mantegna, Escher Holloway, Daniel Booko, Inbar Lavi, Will Rothhaar
Getting That Girl follows high school senior Mandy Meyers (Gia Mantegna) as she is forced to make a transcontinental move from buttoned up Washington D.C. to decidedly relaxed Los Angeles when her father’s business relocates the family. Eager to start fresh, Mandy is excited to try things she’s never done before and have some fun. She makes a big splash on her first day at McDermott High where the school’s two hottest (and meanest) senior girls take her under their less-than-protective wings. The entire male student body equally takes note of Mandy’s fresh new face and she soon finds herself being aggressively pursued by a charismatic stoner and a star football player. Surviving the wild side of high school life in So Cal proves to be an often hilarious, and sometimes slightly scary, adventure in Getting That Girl.
"Getting That Girl" is a Ten romantic comedy that depicts today's youth perfectly. Peer pressure has never been higher than it is right now. Writer/Director, Nathanael Coffman does a great job at bringing all the pressures that a high school student is under to light, he also gives a fantastic performance in the film as Boozer. The film is smart and cleverly written and the characters are well thought out.
So you might be wondering if the film is funny at all, even the art-work shows the film as romance which it is but do not be fooled here, this is one of the funniest films I have seen in some time. I had many laugh out loud moments in the film. There is a nice mix of drama, romance and comedy here.
Another thing that made this film so good was its amazing cast, Gia Mantegna is incredible as Mandy, She is as talented as she is beautiful and if her name sounds familiar it is because she is the daughter of the great Joe Mantegna. Escher Holloway is also fantastic as her slacker love interest. It is tough pointing out cast members here so let me just say that everyone in the film was amazing.
Production wise the film looks great and the choice of off the wall songs used really keeps the film lively. "Getting That Girl" really took me by surprise, I was not really expecting much from it but I was hoping for a few laughs at least but what I got was so much more. This is a film about high school friends and enemies, the affects of peer pressure and finding true love, it is full of fun characters, some play it straight well others are over the top and it has lots of very funny moments through out the film. This is the perfect film for girls and guys alike because it offers something for both. I have seen the film compared to others like "Fast times at Ridgemont High" and while I can seen a few similarities I think this brings enough fresh ideas to the table to stand entirely on its own. So in closing I have to say "Getting That Girl" nails it, it is a highly entertaining film that I highly recommend.
