The Place For The Latest Movie Reviews
Cast: Raul Castillo (Smile 2), Melonie Diaz (Charmed), Tony Cavalero (The Righteous Gemstones), Josh Brener (Silicon Valley), Zoe Winters (Succession)
After losing everything in a cryptocurrency scam, a ragtag team of vigilante Redditors attempt to kidnap the kingpin who screwed them over. But when the home invasion takes a turn for the worst, they become victims in a sadistic game.
After Billy and his friend, Dom, invest their money in cryptocurrency, they finally feel like their lives are changing for the better, but the next day they find out they lost everything after the owner died. Rumors began to circulate online that the owner wasn't dead at all, and instead he scammed everyone out of their money. That is when they meet Eva, who claims to know where the owner lives, so all three decide to go to his home and get their money back, but are they competent enough to get the job done or are they in over their heads?
You can tell right from the start that Dom, Billy and Eva are probably in over their heads when it comes to getting revenge on anything, let alone being scammed by someone with a lot of money and perhaps power, but that is exactly what they went out to do.
The movie is in light mode early on, mixing in some humor to keep things light before the thriller elements kick in later. It sends a warning about investing in such things before doing your homework. The cast of most four all give great performances, including Raśl Castillo as Billy, Tony Cavalero as Dom, Melonie Diaz as the foul-mouthed Eva and Josh Brener as the scammer himself, Charles Hegel. The film was directed by Cutter Hodierne who co-wrote the film with John Hibey. As the film opens, the first credit is "Steven Soderbergh presents", which is sure to get anyone that loves cinema to sit up and give notice.
I was engaged right from the start and got more and more invested in the story as it moved along. The characters are in over their heads and even a little pathetic at times, but you can't help but root for them against the slimeball ball scammer. 'Cold Wallet' is a fun, suspense and violent thriller that I found to be highly entertaining and had a blast watching. That is why I highly recommend checking it out when it opens in Theaters and Digital 2/28.
