Danny - a lonely factory worker, intimidated by life - is battered and humiliated in front of his kids in a random act of violence. His already bleak existence sinks further into the abyss. On the verge of total breakdown he decides to fight back. He meets a group of night-club doormen who take him in and give him the confidence to stand his ground. As he is drawn deeper into their world he becomes embroiled with the local gangland boss, setting in motion a chain of events with shockingly brutal consequences.
"Clubbed" is a crime/drama that was released in 2008 in the UK, it is now getting a DVD release here in the U.S. by Well Go USA Entertainment. British cinema at times can be hit or miss as far as U.S. movie buffs go, some film made there just don't translate well here but "Clubbed" is an exception to that rule. The film is about Danny, a factory worker who is down on his luck and close to suicide, he is recently divorced and even his kids start to see his weaknesses. When he meets some new friends at a boxing gym his life begins to change for the better, the guys are doormen at a local club and once Danny gets a job at the club as well the film becomes much more complex by introducing more characters and story-lines to the fold. If you're a fan of Guy Richie gangland type films I highly recommend checking this one out, I myself found it to be better than most of Guy's films. What separates this film from others like it is that you can't sun it up in just a few words, sure there is some graphic violence and also some harsh language but just when you have the film down as just that it tosses in some emotional scenes like the relationship Danny shares with his daughters. The film has a strong plot, engaging characters and a unique gritty style that are all it's own. The performances are stunning and the 70's/80's soundtrack really adds to the over-all feel of the story. The film has a multitude of characters that all have their own story to tell but to go into those details would only ruin the film for those wanting to check it out.
I found "Clubbed" to be one of the better British films I have seen in some time, it is certainly violent at times but it also contains characters you care about in one way or another, if you like a good crime drama then I highly suggest picking this one one, you will be glad you did.
