The Place For The Latest Movie Reviews
November 17, 1988, is a day of mourning for some...and for others, a lucrative opportunity. On that date, eight university students were found murdered in the old arts building at the college. An anonymous source told police the 20-somethings were in the midst of a local role-playing game, called Chill. The name of the game is to stay alive. But for the players that November evening, few would be getting up for another round. But when a scheming student decides to profit from the tragedy and revive the whodunit game as a web series, the new players soon discover, for some, this game is still all too real…
"Chill" is about Jared, a college student Jared who persuades his buddy to help him recreate the interactive game known as "Chill" which was banned from the campus because years ago a group of students was murdered playing the game. Jared sets up the game and gets people to play but when the game begin so does the murders again.
"Chill" starts off a bit slow but it is deliberate. It takes it's time setting up the story and introducing us to its many characters as well. It also takes the time to fill us in on the back story which is very important to the film. This is one of those movies that gets better as it moves along, I was not so sure about the film early on but as it moved along it became a much better film.
There are numerous characters in the film and each one is very well developed which is great because it allows the audience to have feelings for them in one way or another. The film has a good bit of humor in it which keeps it light at times but I thought its main strength was the amount of suspense and mystery it creates as it moves along. I thought I had a good idea who the killer was but the end proved me wrong with its clever and shocking finale.
Noelle Bye and Meredith Holland both did a terrific job directing the story by Meredith Holland (with additional writing by Noelle Bye and Roger Conners) they keep the film moving a great pace while slowly amping up the blood, suspense and mystery as it moves along. And finally the cast all did an amazing job playing their characters, this is an ensemble piece so I am not going to play favorites here as far as the actors go so look above at the cast listing and know that each and everyone of them did a great job.
"Chill" was definitely a pleasant surprise for me, I was not sure what to expect from it before watching and early on in the film but it turned out to be an engaging film that kept me on the edge, I love a good whodunit and this did a great job at keeping me guessing the entire time. There is plenty of cool kills along the way and just the right about of blood to satisfy any fan of the genre. "Chill" is what Indie film making is all about, its original, clever and about as entertaining a film as you are going to see.
I recommend you visit the film's Facebook page located HERE to keep up on its progress. I also want to thank Noelle Bye for sending me a copy of the film for review.
