Cast: Jennifer Garner, Ty Burrell, Olivia Wilde, Rob Corddry, Ashley Greene, Alicia Silverstone, Hugh Jackman, Yara Shahidi
In Iowa, butter carving is as cut-throat as a Presidential election, plagued with scandal, greed, blackmail, and sex -- except with butter! When long-reigning champion butter sculptor, Bob Pickler (Ty Burrell), is forced to step down, his zealous wife, Laura (Jennifer Garner) enters the competition herself, to fight for their status as butter royalty. A win seems virtually guaranteed for the poised and studied candidate when a formidable contender emerges: the fresh-faced, effortlessly charismatic 10-year-old Destiny (Yara Shahidi), an African-American foster child of local couple, Jill and Ethan (Alicia Silverstone and Rob Corddry). Suddenly, it's anybody's game and Laura will do anything to win -- even if it means resorting to sabotage and seducing her foolish ex-boyfriend Boyd (Hugh Jackman) as a co-conspirator.
"Butter" was on Video On Demand around the same time as it's limited theatrical release. Movies are released in such a way for several reasons but I would guess it's R rating was one reason for this film. The film reminded me of "Best In Show" with it's zany characters. the premise of the film is terrific and very original. Set in the competitive and world of butter carving. Ty Burrell and Jennifer Garner play Bob and Laura Pickler, the reigning champs of the annual event. Bob has been the butter carving champion for fifteen consecutive years, and Laura has enjoyed all the attention and has gained power within the community as well. When Bob is asked to step aside and make room for a new champion this infuriates Laura who decides to join the competition herself. She will have heavy competition from an orphan girl who has a real talent for butter craving. Then there is the stripper who decides to join the contest in order to force Bob to pay her the money he owes for her their one night stand
"Butter is a highly entertaining film that is hilarious at times with it's rude and crude humor. It also contains some very good messages about love and family as well but this is mostly an adult comedy that is very unique which is something we rarely see nowadays. The film's cast is simply amazing, this has to be one of Jennifer Garner's best roles to date and Ty Burrell is also terrific as Bob. Yara Shahidi is also great as the 10-year-old Destiny and Olivia Wilde is laugh out loud funny as the stripper.
Production wise the film looks great and the story has a very nice pace to it. I see "Butter" doing very well on home video with strong word of mouth, this is definitely one the year's better comedies.
