The Place For The Latest Movie Reviews
Cast: Milo Cawthorne, Olivia Tennet, Ari Boyland
Milton (Cawthorne, Deathgasm), a brilliant chemistry student breaks out of court-mandated drug rehab with a mysterious bad girl, Skyler (Tennet, "When We Go to War"). Looking to recruit a cook for a one-day drug score, she lures him to an isolated cabin with her psychotic and trigger-happy boyfriend Russell (Boyland, "Shortland Street").
Russell reveals that he plans to murder Milton as soon as he is finished cooking the drugs, and their simple love triangle quickly descends into a mind-blowing supernatural cycle of carnage and mayhem with no end...and no escape.
The film's opening scene grabs you by the throat and it holds on tight until the very end. "Blood Punch" then settles down a bit as it introduces us to one of its main characters, Milton. He is serving time in rehab, while there he meets the beautiful and crazy Skyler who seduces Milton so she can get him to cook a large quantity of meth after her boyfriend, Russell breaks them out. As crazy as Skyler is, Russell is ten times worse and Milton quickly learns that during the escape. Things quickly turn bad when Milton finds out that Russell plans on killing him after he is done cooking the meth.
The film remains a normal crime film up until about half way through when it becomes a total assault on the mind. I am not going to go into details so not to ruin the film for those that are waiting to see it but I will say it took me by surprise and after that I was waiting to see what was going to happen next and how Milton was going to get out of the mess he was in.
"Blood Punch" is an intelligent Horror/Thriller with elements of crime and the supernatural. I have to give loads of credit to Writer, Eddie Guzelian for creating just a mind-blowing experience that has enough twists and turns to fill in two feature films. Director, Madellaine Paxson also did an amazing job putting such a unique story to film. I cannot wait to see what this talented film maker has coming next.
And with any great script and director you need a cast that can bring the characters to life and I do not think they could have picked a better group of actors to do just that. Olivia Tennetas Skyler, Milo Cawthorne as Milton and Ari Boyland Russell are fantastic in the film and they all play off each other perfectly. The rest of the cast all gave great performances as well in supporting roles.
Production wise the film looks much bigger than its budget suggests and the effects are very well done. I loved the look and settings were perfect.
"Blood Punch" is one of those films that puts you on the edge of your seat the entire time. It makes you think while entertaining you with twist after twist and lots of carnage. Hollywood can learn a lot from "Blood Punch" as far as making films that are as original and clever as this one is. This is most definitely a must own for anyone that loves a good horror film. Engaging, creepy, scary and loads of fun.
