Cast: Samuel L. Jackson, Ray Stevenson, Victor Garber, Felicity Huffman, Ted Levine
In the rugged countryside of Finland, a young thirteen-year-old (Onni Tommila) embarks on a traditional quest to prove himself by spending twenty-four hours alone in the wild, armed with only a bow and arrow. After witnessing a spectacular crash, he discovers the escape pod from Air Force One, containing the President of the United States (Samuel L. Jackson). When they realize a group of kidnappers is hot on their trail with the intention of taking the president, this unlikely duo must escape their hunters as they search for the American Special Forces team sent out to find them.
"Big Game" debuted in theaters and on VOD and now it is on DVD and Blu-ray. The basic story line goes like this, in Finland when a boy reaches his 13th birthday he is sent out into the woods for 24 hours by himself and he is expected to bring something back an animal from the wild to prove that he is now a man. This year it is Oskari's turn. His father is one of the greatest hunters and he wants nothing more than his son to succeed and not embarrass him. But things don’t go as planned when Air Force One is shot down and the President is ejected in a pod. All this happens in the woods where Oskari is staying. He finds the pod and lets the President out but the men that shot down the plane are now looking to hunt down the leader as big game. The two must figure out a way to stay alive until help arrives.
There has been a lot of mixed reviews over this film. One of the reasons for that in my opinion is people do not realize they are watching an action/adventure geared more toward young teens. It is a family oriented action film so do not expect an R-rated film here.
Now do not get me wrong here this is in no way a great movie. It has a plot that is totally unbelievable and the characters in the film could have been more developed but on the flip side the film has some very good action scenes and the effects are well-done plus you have star power with Samuel Jackson and Onni Tommila gives an impressive performance as Oskari. I hope to see a lot more of this talented young actor in the future
"Big Game" is an action/adventure the whole family can enjoy so don't be afraid to suspend belief a little and just sit back and enjoy the ride. The film reminded me of the action films from the 80's when movies were just really fun to watch. It certainly could have been better but I enjoyed watching it. There's plenty of action, some laughs and the film is nice to look, I couldn't ask for anything more.
