The Place For The Latest Movie Reviews
An exterminator (Greg Grunberg) and his Hispanic sidekick (Lombardo Boyar) are caught in an epic battle when a military assault fails to contain a giant alien spider rampaging through the city of Los Angeles.
The film's title "Big Ass Spider" tells it all. As the story opens we witness a giant spider on top of a skyscraper as the military attempts to take it down as does the film's hero, then the film quickly shifts back to tell the complete story as it introduces us to Alex who is an exterminator working in Los Angeles. He specializes in spiders and believes in his head that he is the world's best exterminator. When a minor spider bite sends him to the local emergency room he learns that something has escaped and it just happens to be spider. But this is no ordinary spider, it is of alien origin and has the ability to grow very large in a very short period of time so it doesn't take long before Special Forces Major and his men are on the case. Alex is also willing to get involved against the major's orders, but Alex is convinced he is the man for the job, after all he can inside a spider's head. So he teams up with the hospital's security guard to take care of the spider as but what they do not realize this is no ordinary spider, at least not yet.
If you like "Eight Legged Freaks" then are you sure to enjoy this. I would not call this a horror movie, to me it is more a sci-fi comedy. I thought the film was very well written all things considered and I loved a good bit of the film's humor which is sprinkled through-out its run time. There is a lot to like here, the film as a fast pace, there is a bit of gore added in and it's effects were much better than I expected them to be.
Another great thing about the film was its cast, everyone did a great job including Ray Wise, Greg Grunberg as the film's hero and Lombardo Boyar is hilarious as his sidekick, he steals every scene he is in. "Big Ass Spider" is nothing more than a brainless, fun piece of cinema that doesn't take itself serious so neither should you. I am not going to continue and spoil the fun for those wanting to see it. I did have a great time watching the film, if I had to complain about one thing it would be the ending, I thought it was a bit rushed but other than that I found it to be highly entertaining. I highly recommend seeing it, just sit back and go with it, if you do that you are going to find it to be as much fun as I did.
